Next month you’ll be able to try the world’s spiciest tortilla chip for a limited time, made by gourmet tortilla chip brand, Paqui. It’s so spicy, that apparently one is enough: The chips are coming individually package and cost 4.99 per ‘bag.’
The packaging is a wrapped chip inside of a bright little ‘coffin’ with the grim reaper and his/her handy scythe, with a warning of side effects such as: “short-term loss of speech followed by extreme profanity, heavy breathing, enhanced sinus functions, and impaired vision from heat-induced tears.” Just the way I like my food to greet me.
The chip will be made with the world’s spiciest pepper, the Carolina Reaper pepper, with a dusting of chipotle–ghost pepper seasoning. The latter is really more for the #aesthetic, given that the Carolina Reaper clocks in at at 2.2 million Scoville units, which means it’s half as potent as pepper spray (which tempts me to carry it in my purse to throw at potential predators).
Paqui is implementing the #OneChipChallenge: anyone who posts themselves eating the chip with that hashtag on social media will receive a free bag of plain Paqui’s tortilla chips. Which at $4.99 vs $2, doesn’t make much sense to me, but I guess I’ve never been great at math.
Why one chip? According to Paqui brand manager Jeff Day “The reason that we’re selling this as one chip is because quite honestly, that’s all that you need. “That’s all that anyone needs.”
