Spider-Man and Captain America’s movie is so morbid and depressing that it might be a bad idea to take little kids to go see it. Meanwhile, Deadpool and Cable’s movie is being promoted as fun, campy, and dare we say, optimistic? And oh look, here’s actual Celine Dion — not a lookalike, not a deepfake, THE REAL CELINE DION — singing to The Merc With A Mouth in the video for this summer’s first banger, “Ashes.”todays
We live in a very strange era. Definitely not a good era, and maybe not even an interesting era, but definitely a strange one.
According to E! News, this thing was shot in The Colosseum at Caesars Palace and directed by the same dude who told everybody what to do on the Deadpool 2 set, David Leitch.
“Ashes” injects some direly needed earnestness into a franchise that’s a little too obsessed with self-parody. This is not a tongue-in-cheek version of Celine Dion appearing alongside Deadpool. This is the full-blown “My Heart Will Go On” tower of pathos C. Even Wade Wilson himself — portrayed as is typical by Dion’s fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds — is left baffled by the end of the clip.
“It’s too good! This is Deadpool 2, not Titanic,” the once Hal Jordan declares after Dion finishes rocking his world. “You’re at, like, an 11. We need to get you to five; five and a half, tops. Just phone it in.”
“Listen. This thing only goes to 11,” explains the onetime winner of, like, every Grammy, while gesturing to her cosmic-powered vocal chords. “So beat it, Spider-Man.”
Deadpool 2 comes out on May 18th. Even if Reynolds’s whole “Lookit how I’m self-aware and breaking the fourth wall ISN’T THAT UNBELIEVABLY CLEVER?!” routine is starting to wear thin, Holy Shit am I ever looking forward to smiling and laughing at a superhero movie again after Infinity War destroyed my ability to remember what happiness feels like.
