Okay, so as you may already know, Tommy Wiseau’s been goofing around on Twitter about the prospect of playing The Joker in an upcoming origin story/standalone film in which Joaquin Phoenix has likely already locked down the lead part. And it’s great for Tommy Wiseau to goof around. It’s one of the things he’s genuinely great at. But this bullshit about him playing The Joker has gone too far, and Nerdist should be ashamed of themselves for enabling this absurd delusion.
In the video above, Wiseau paints himself up in the manner of Heath Ledger’s untouchable interpretation of one of fiction’s greatest villains and recites signature lines of Dark Knight dialogue like “Why So Serious?” and “I’m not a monster…I’m just ahead of the curve.” He also hits Jack Nicholson’s equally famous “Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?” bit from 1989’s Tim Burton-directed Batman, and drops the line, “I’m The Joker, and the joke’s on you!” which I don’t remember from any Batman films, but sounds a lot like something the Joker would say.
I’m also pretty certain that’s Disaster Artist author and The Room’s “Mark” Greg Sestero sliding on the Batmask midway through the non-“audition.”
Personally, I resent the mere implication that a blatant novelty act like Wiseau can or should even try or pretend to try to get himself mentioned in the same breath as Heath Ledger. However, if Wiseau had based this mock audition tape off of Jared Leto’s turn as the Clown Prince in Suicide Squad…Eh, in that case, I wouldn’t be so offended.
