Jack Nicolson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto…and now Joaquin.
Though Warner Bros. hasn’t technically confirmed anything, sources at Variety say the Oscar-Nominated actor was the top choice for the role, and that he has already signed on. This is awesome news, as Joaquin Phoenix is famously choosey with his roles, very rarely signing onto the type of Blockbusters he could easily make millions off of. This more-than-likely means he’s taking the character very seriously, and probably thinks the movie will hold some integrity.
The film intends to portray Joker’s character in Gotham during the time in which he becomes the supervillian we all know (and love.) It’s supposed to rely on a heavy 80’s aesthetic, which is backed by the fact that it’s being produced by Martin Scorsese. This means that at the very worst, we at least get a Joker film in the vein of Taxi Driver…and that sounds amazing.
As most Batman fans will tell you, The Joker’s origins are largely a fuzzy concept. His tale of becoming-bad has been told and re-told a bunch of times, with no single story line considered to be the official truth. But the ambiguity allows for multiple stabs at the tale, and the creative freedom in which to do so. But will this film fit into the DC Universe canon?
Probably not. And I’d wager that’ll prove to be a very good thing.
