iCarly is a Clarissa Explains It All/Mickey Mouse Club hybrid that was a very big deal on kids’ TV up until about five years ago.
One Direction did an iCarly cameo. Emma Stone also did an iCarly thing. If you were a preteen during the first term of The Obama Administration, odds are you’re familiar with iCarly and the extended universe of non-threatening, goofy sitcoms in the same vein.
Which brings us to this…
This is thirtysomething and maybe even fifty-or-sixtysomething dudes in a D.I.Y. rendition of “iAm Your Biggest Fan,” iCarly’s first season’s thirteenth episode. We know it was originally posted to YouTube in 2013 on a since-defunct channel overseen by an aspiring singer known as “Kyle,” who does not appear in the video himself. None of the actors involved make any effort to convince us they’re teenage girls. They merely recite lines intended for teenage girls. It looks harmless, but it inexplicably feels wrong somehow.
What we don’t know is the “why” of it all. Is this a totally innocent, earnest tribute to Miranda Cosgrove and her cohort? Is there some sinister, perverted subtext we haven’t detected? Could we get in trouble for watching this???
So there it is. Old men are iCarly now. Fuckin’a! What a world.
