What is a “pink movie?” Well, it’s basically a Japanese soft-core porn movie that maintains a peculiar artistic integrity. Though the movies tend to deal with sexuality, and delivers the goods on nudity, the emphasis remains heavily on the cinematic craft. Some of Japan’s best filmmakers honed their directorial skills while working on pinrk movies, sometimes only transitioning into mainstream studio filmmaking after years of working in the pink trenches. The ‘pink cinema’ world offered the rare freedom for these Japanese filmmakers to experiment thematically and cinematically in the usually rigid studio system.

The Midnight Pulp editorial team selected 9 outrageous pink movies to accompany you on this spiritual journey.

School of the Holy Beast (1974)

“Lustful Nuns Whip a Woman” – no, not a small town indie rock band, but a one sentence description of a brutal scene in this film. I went to Catholic school all my life and saw plenty of nuns in my time. Some old, some young, some sweet, some very mean. I wasn’t raised in a generation where a ruler to the ass was acceptable in an educational environment, but you could see it in their eyes…they wanted to bring the pain. Disproportionate ruler-to-student ratio at that school (it has since closed down…)…but none of the sisters were as extreme as these Sacred Heart Convent nuns. There’s one scene where Maya Takigawa is tortured and whipped with thorns by Sister Mary Crucifix and her gang.

Rose whip

Where were these religious bombshells when we were dealing with Regan MacNeil or Damien? Clearly in Japan and having a good ole time.

There’s another scene where two nuns are forced to whip each other while topless. God bless.

Sexy Battle Girls (1986)

Mirai Asamiya undergoes training when she learns that the headmaster of her private, all-girls school destroyed her family. She wants revenge, but it’s sexy revenge. So her weapons are dildo and vibrator inspired, she has a chastity belt straight out of the SAW franchise, and her vaginal superpower can split an apple into pieces. It can SPLIT an apple into pieces.

Weapon of choice: Kendama

Who needs a can opener in the presence of Mirai Asamiya? This superpower is called the “Venus Crush,” which I assume would be her finishing move in a Rumble Roses game.

Tokyo Decadence (1992)

Tokyo Decadence is a serious, tough film – the overall tone is bleak; the BDSM scenes are unforgiving. Directed by award-winning author Ryu Murakami, the film stands alone as a transgressive dissection of the depraved underbelly of Tokyo’s nightlife at the turn of the Japanese financial bubble in the early 90’s. Thematically, it shares a similar psyche as ‘American Psycho’ by Bret Easton Ellis.

One sequence in particular stands out: The movie’s protagonist, Ai, is playing the role of spectator as a dominatrix has her way with a submissive man.

While teasing him (she calls him “turtle face”) as he rests on his knees, she pulls the wig off, leaving the man in shame with his baldness.

Dude, it was pretty obvious anyway.

The dominatrix then forces her sub into a dog bowl… we’ll leave it up to your imagination.

Not my ideal Friday night.

She then puts on a strap-on, cackling wildly as the scene cuts away. Ai rightfully looks like she rather be anywhere else.

A Lonely Cow Weeps at Dawn (2003)

Awks

Some are simply moved by this film, searching under the surface for hidden meaning, and appreciating the affection the characters have for one another. A daughter-in-law pretends to be her senile father’s dead/favorite cow. She gets milked by him. It’s a metaphor because she feels like an old cow, and he’s able to fill that void. People can look into this movie all they want, but at the end of the day, this woman is on her hands and knees getting her boobs milked like utters. Mooo.

Whore Hospital (1997)

A nurse starts at a new hospital (a WHORE hospital!) only to be told that, coincidentally, sex heals the patients AND the nurses are all addicted to sex. That setup makes sense, at least. Our lead learns the sexy truth about this hospital and can’t seem to handle it.

What are we looking at doc?

The nurse is then told that her “erogenous zone” is in her throat. Your imagination could fill in the blanks there. Plenty of nudity, including a surprising number of boners in nearly see-through underwear. And the big one – a hospital room filled with horny nurses and patients getting it on.

Maid-Droid (2008)

The “human/robot” dynamic has been explored recently in movies like HER (2013) and EX MACHINA (2015). What would it be like to fall in love and/or have sex with artificial intelligence made to look like a human being? Well, Maid-Droid involves a man who spent his entire life under the care of a droid named Maria. If you need to get yourself off on sexy robots, this is the movie for you.

Go, Go, Second-Time Virgin (1969)

Shot mostly in cinematic black and white, Go Go is a critically-acclaimed experimental arthouse film by Koji Wakamatsu, one of the “most important director to emerge in the pink film genre.”

What’s a second virgin?

The story follows a girl named Poppo, who is raped by a gang of four boys. Later she meets Tsukio, who also shares her history of sexual abuse.

In a Wizard of Oz-esque turn, the movie goes from B&W to color, showcasing a full on orgy – thrusting, water sports, orgy things you know – culminating in a cathartic, bloody massacre by Tsukio.

The credits of the film features quick shots of Roman Polanski and what seems to be a deceased Sharon Tate, further encapsulating the zeitgeist of the time.

Groper Train: Wedding Capriccio (1984)

This one from the popular, and incredibly inappropriate, ‘Groper Train’ series is directed by an Academy Award winner.

Yes, you read that correctly. Japanese Yojiro Takita won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film for ‘Departures.’ But before the man was making award-winning family features, he was busy honing his craft making seven ‘Groper Train’ movies.

The Japanese title is even more ridiculous.

With pink movies like these…at least you know what you’re getting. You know a certain activity is going to take place in a certain location. The world’s greatest detective is inspecting women on trains(?). It doesn’t really matter what the rest of the plot is – the title alone is enough for  you to give this one a look. And you will – you know you will.

Anti-Porno (2016)

Sion Sono is the enfant terrible of Japanese cinema today – of course he’d go and make a post-milennial pink movie to revive infamous Nikkatsu ‘Roman Porno’ series from one of Japan’s premier studios.

Can pink movies be feminist?

Aptly titled Anti-Porno, Sono’s movie turns the usually misogynist genre of sexploitation into a study of modern feminine agency. Of course, there is still plenty of sex and classic sadomasochism – this time between a arrogant young female artiste and her older, hapless assistant.
